Sailing route for Schooner Yankee(Irving Johnson 1939)
At Rennell and Bellona in the Solomons we found out what it felt like to be surrounded by yelling savages to be the center of attention of a crowd of wild haired natives to have them all over our ship and not nearly enough canoes somehow for them to get ashore in. (Irving Johnson 1939)
On the beach at Bellona the spears and natives crowded around us so thick that it was impossible as well as unwise to venture into the bush. (Irving Johnson 1939)
No trace of white man’s civilization can be found in the inland village on Rennell. This primitive couple is standing in front of their house which is of the most casual construction – a sort of pup tent of coconut fronds. Their clothes are of pounded bark cloth dyed brigh yellow. Most of the women were more elaborately tattooed than this one. Many of them were pretty. (Irving Johnson 1939)
Dan seems to be getting away with some white man’s magic before a rapt audience on Rennell Island. This woman probably hasn’t seen a dozen white men in her life. (Irving Johnson 1939)
The first mate and the Rennell Islander seem to be sizing each other up. (Irving Johnson 1939)
We could meet the natives on their own ground after we finished trading at Bellona. (Irving Johnson 1939)
