Both reefs and the islands are situated on the- Rennell Bank that stands above the surrounding sea floor. A slightly greater amount of upliftis now Lake Tegano. Bellonafurther to theis on the other side of the uplift and slopes away slightly to the northwest. The level of theis lower and coral has grown upwards to sea level Bellona of the bank at Rennell and Bellona relative to the Indispensable Reefs has resulted in the formation of the islands. Uplift has not been level across the islands with the result that Rennell slopes downward to the southeast its ancient lagoon forming the basin that north underlying sea floor at the Indispensable Reefs resulting in a uniform height for all reefs.
